The Modelling Cluster gives support to moderately parallel intense calculations as well as data analysis in a Linux environment. Parallel calculations, as well as parallel calculations with communication between servers through MPI libraries or Gigabit interconnected network and calculations distributed between servers, are processed in shared memory. The combination of the calculation power and the storage resources allows the users to generate, analyse and distribute vast amounts of data between the calculation servers. The cluster provides the following services: The Unit offers an installation service as well as configuring software for clusters or optimised Linux servers for scientific calculus. The software package offered includes: RedHat 4 operating system, mathematics library and compilers (gcc or provided by the user); Torque working manager and accounting utility. It also provides monitoring tools (ganglia) and parallel calculus libraries (MPICH). The installation would be under the condition of the hardware being compatible with the Linux (redHat 4) distribution for 2007 which is used by the Unit. The Unit could, previously, advise about the election of the most suitable hardware and, without further charge, provide limited support for the installations. This is subject to the Unit technician's availability.
The equipment of these facilities is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with the management of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
